The deadbolt on your front door is one of the most important pieces of hardware in your home. A few simple facts help you choose one that actually protects you.
Deadbolts are tested and rated by ANSI/BHMA. Grade 1 is the highest, built for heavy use and strength. Grade 2 is a solid residential level. Grade 3 is the most basic. For an exterior door, a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt is a good goal.
A single-cylinder deadbolt uses a key outside and a thumbturn inside. This is the usual choice for homes, because anyone can exit quickly in an emergency. A double-cylinder deadbolt needs a key on both sides, which is sometimes used near glass panels but can slow exit during a fire. Check local rules and think carefully before choosing one.
Keypad deadbolts remove the need to carry a key for everyday use, and you can give each family member a separate code. We always recommend a mechanical key backup. See our keypad lock installation page for details.
A strong deadbolt held by short screws in a thin door frame can fail on the first hard kick. A reinforced strike plate with long screws that reach the framing is what turns a good lock into a secure door.
Alignment, door prep and the right hardware all matter. Our deadbolt installation service in Mill Basin, Marine Park and nearby areas includes checking the door and frame, and we offer high-security cylinders for anyone who wants extra resistance to picking and bumping.
