When you need to stop old keys from working, you have two options: rekey the lock or replace it. Both work. The right one depends on the condition of your hardware and what you want from it.
Rekeying changes the internal pins of the lock so the old key no longer fits, and a new key does. The lock stays on the door. It is quick and usually the more affordable option.
Rekey if your locks are in good condition and you simply want to cut off old key holders: after moving into a new home, after a roommate or tenant leaves, or after you lose a set of keys.
Replace the lock if it is worn, loose, rusted, damaged, or a low-grade model that is easy to defeat. Replacing is also the move when you want a different style, a higher security grade or a smart lock. See our lock change service.
A strong lock on a weak door is not much protection. If the frame is cracked or the strike plate is held by short screws, upgrade those as well. A reinforced strike plate with long screws is a modest cost and a big improvement.
A good locksmith will look at your locks and tell you honestly which option makes sense, and will not push the most expensive one. Call us for a free estimate in Mill Basin, Marine Park and nearby Brooklyn neighborhoods.
